odd things about oregon

  • freezing fog

  • "kicker" checks

  • pronunciations:
        Clatskanie (CLAT-scan-eye)
Multnomah (mult-NO-mah. i guess not that hard to pronounce; but just weird-looking)
        Willamette (will-AMM-it)
Couch Street (cooch. seriously... it's cooch.)

i'm sure all keep adding to this list as things occur to me.

    What's freezing fog like?

to me it just seems like cold fog. it's not like there's ice suspended in the air or anything. but at least once a week i hear the public radio announcer say "freezing fog" is part of the current morning's conditions.

this would be a good time to point out that it's COLD here. i wear a down parka most every day. it's not that the temperature itself is all that low (though it's been low enough to snow *twice* already), but it's the combination of cold temperatures and *dampness* that is really getting to me. i often get chilled to the bone.

oh yes, the kicker check. lest you forget that there's a serious "don't tread on me" streak running through those sprout-eatin', birkenstock-wearin', funny-name-pronouncin' hippies out there.

here in washington, not too far from tacoma, we have a town called puyallup. it took me a while to wrap my head around the pronunciation of that one. pew-allup. or is it poo-yallup?

have you gotten used to not pumping your own gas? i think that would be tough for me. do you tip the gas-pumpers?

no tipping of the gas-pumpers! maybe i would if i asked them to check my oil or something. but they've gotta be there by law. it's their job to pump.

i'm always amazed that one guy can handle so many cars. (usually there's only one guy out there doing the pumping.) if it's busy, though, you can sit there forever while he runs from car to car, pumping here, taking payment there, shutting off pumps at the next island.

i miss pumping my own gas at self-service pumps, where i slide my credit card in, pump and go. outta there in 3 minutes. here it takes much longer.
