chaos
holy fucking shit, what a crazy day.
i was expecting the movers at 8am, so i woke up at 6 to finish packing. the movers were about 90 minutes late, which is good because i was putting things in boxes right up until they walked in the door. two guys and a huge semi.
they loaded my stuff, and it felt really weird to sit and watch. i wanted to help in some way, but when i offered the young lanky driver said, "is this the first time you've been moved by a professional moving company before?? you're paying us to do the work for you!" oh yeah, right. so i just kept refilling their water glasses and made fun chit-chat and tried to make their job a little easier. i also flirted a little more, thinking it might help get my stuff to the west coast more quickly. (he told me to expect it on the 18th! the day after i arrive in portland! yay!)
about an hour into the loading, the oil tank removal folks showed up with their backhoe and started digging. that was fun to watch! and here's a little video of its unearthing:
the good news is that no obvious contamination was found!! a soil sample is going to the lab, but i was told that if you can't smell the petroleum in the dirt then chances are good that any contamination that is found will be below government-set levels for "official" contamination. i'll find out in a few days what the lab says. i'm operating as if i won't have to deal with cleaning up any kind of leak, though.
to add to the day's nuttiness, i also finalized payment and transportation of my new car. it's currently in albuquerque. in a week or two it will be in portland.
and now my house is empty and i'm TIRED. yet i'm going to go to the apple store tonight and buy a new computer. a going-away present for myself.

Good for you for getting yourself a going-away present!
It's surreal watching your life boxed up and put on a semi. I've done it a few times now, but it's still quite unreal.
