no a/c
i've been hearing stories of a massive heat wave out west. (my tv is on a truck, so it's been hard for me to keep up with the news. this information only just came to me and it's probably -what?- a week old?)
anyway, someone mentioned to me that a lot of houses in the northwest aren't air conditioned because it's so damn mild all year 'round. when i rented my apartment i didn't even think to ask if it had a/c. i just assumed it did.
i emailed the leasing company and they confirmed that my apartment DOES NOT have a/c.
it's been close to 100 degrees in portland this last week, so i was worried that i'd completely melt upon arrival. but looking ahead to next week's forecast, it looks like i'll thankfully be avoiding all of the heat wave. monday's high is forecast to be 79 degrees.

weather.com says it's 90 there today, then will drop every day, until it's in the low 70s by the time you get there.
Man the weather sounds nice in Portland. Good thing you knit, you're going to need sweaters!
A lot of the apartments in San Diego didn't have heaters because it rarely got cold. Well, they did, if you consider a toaster heating element mounted on the wall with a timer a heater.
That's a switch! Fascinating.
Air conditioning is the exception rather than the norm in PDX. It's only been 90 and above here for 3 days, and the nights cool off so a fan in the window suffices most of the summer. Make a trip to Fred Meyer for a cheap box fan when you get to town and you'll be fine!
My pals at she said / she said just mentioned "in our upstairs room with the air-conditioning" in a recent blog. At first I thought they were living in some kind of deprived state. Then I realized that they were actually just living in a generally cool State.
i do think it hit 100 yesterday in our small south puget sound city, but today it's markedly cooler. it's supposed to remain cooler (between 75 and 85 i think) for a while, and there might be showers on sunday.
our house has no air conditioning. we have a lot of fans. you'll be fine. (between kara and me, a lot of time has been spent in doctors' offices recently, and we've relished the a/c there!)
and now for the news.
Oh my god, I went to lots of people's houses in the PACNW and everyone had AC.......how bizarre.......
I have spent 19 summers here in the town Xta just left, most of them on her old street even, and I have never had AC. I'm not saying this is a good thing. I'm not saying anyone should admire me for this. I guess I am saying, we all can stand more than we think we can stand. And the house doesn't get to smelling too bad if you keep air moving through at night. I wouldn't live this way in a house that I own though, should that ever come to pass.
