touch me someplace i can feel

whoa.

i just saw the most amazing documentary, about cartoonist john callahan.

you know his stuff, certainly:

i've seen his work for years, and all along i'd been thinking he was one warped motherfucker... i mean, just check out the hate mail section of his website. he must be a grumpy, angry, sumabitch, right?

wrong. this documentary (out on DVD in september) shows him to be a profoundly spiritual person. i was moved to tears at two points during the film... i had to reach into my purse, in the dark theater, to grab a pen & paper in order to scribble down some of the most insightful comments he made. even better, he was at the screening (he lives in portland) and was genuinely happy to answer even the most probing questions about his paralyzation, his music and his art. he even suggested an after-party, spur of the moment, so that we could all continue talking after the theater kicked us out.

this theater, btw, was in a completely new part of town for me, but an area that i'd heard was pretty hip. i loved it. i live in the NE portion of portland; the theater was in the NW, on 21st. pretty nice vibe in that area. shops & restaurants & an elvis impersonator on the street corner across from papa haydn.

i swear this town is surreal in the best possible way.

That sounds really cool.
And I like his stuff.
I nearly shot coffee out my nose from the cartoon you posted.

Years and years ago I read his book "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot" and it convinced me he was a pretty good guy. I hope I have a chance to see that documentary.

Callahan is awesome. I also read the "Don't Worry" book and have often wondered how he's fared since then.
