new things
today i went to the DEQ (i had to look up what that stands for) to get an emissions test on my new car. you can't register a vehicle or get plates without doing so. the site wasn't too hard to find, i only had to wait about 5 minutes, and the car passed. so that's good.
now i have to take that paperwork to a DMV office to get the plates. i thought i might be able to accomplish that at a satellite DMV in the basement of the mall i walk through every day. not so, says the DEQ guy. i have to go to a full-blown DMV office. he gave me a list of branches... i'm going to have to figure out which is closest to me and how -and when- to get there.
i miss my old work schedule... rolling in to the station around noon and leaving at 7 or 8. that was nice. i could get a lot of errands done in the morning on my way to work. with my 8-4 schedule now, it's a little harder. how do people get anything done? the DMV is open basically only when i'm at work. i guess a lunch trip is in order.
after work i walked a few blocks to this place to get some dinner --a giant burrito and a dos equis-- and ate on the sidewalk, watching people walk by. the weather here today is glorious. they tell me this is what portland is always like in the summer -- clear skies, no humidity, and highs in the mid-70s. fantastic.
my air shift is steadily improving. i'm feeling more at home, more sure of myself and my skills. in fact, get this: my boss got a call today from a listener who is SO THRILLED with my on-air work these past couple of days that she suggested i actually go off-air for a week and spend my time *training the other announcers*.
so there you go. i rock, apparently.

Woo hoooo! You went to the Taqueria on the corner AND you drank beer! Now you just have to drink some Oregon microbrews. And uh, YEAH you rock on the air. Train them indeed! You are delighted to be on the air and I am delighted that I can listen to you whilst I work. Seriously, it's cool that you are getting such an immediate positive response and that your boss is telling you these things. They're gonna love you out there! Though, it's still weird to hear you talk about Portland and say "we" in the same sentence! :-)
"how do people get anything done?"
we don't. we just flip out about never getting anything done and post lots of stuff to our blogs about chronic disorganization disorder, or whatever. :)
as reese would say, "Chrithta, it thuckth."
dos equis! - YEEAACH! With all the WONDERFUL Northwest microbrews available?? Oh you do need some serious training (in beer choices, NOT radio announcing). OK, you train the announcers, then find one who is a humulus lupo-maniac to train you in the fine art of brew-tasting...
I think your schedule only moved up by one hour. It's just that you also moved three time zones. That's the part that makes it tough :-)
cat, here's the thing:
i don't really like beer.
i rarely, if ever, drink it. and when i do drink it, i prefer it taste as much like water as possible.
i'm afraid the allure of the microbrew will be lost on me. i'm MUCH more interested in oregon wineries. ;-)
Your comment makes me appreciate our company's policy on extended work days and the flex schedule -- 9-hour days Mon thru Thurs, I alternate between 8 hour Fridays and 3-day weekends. So I can schedule doctor, dentist, vet, repairs, banks, DMV, etc., and NOT take time off work.
Will told me there is a HUGE sign outside the studio with the correct call letters and station slogan or whatever. Your enthusiasm really comes through on the air!
Some of us have to use leave time to get stuff done. If we're lucky, our bosses don't ask to many questions about one-day "illnesses," because some of us have plenty of sick leave but never enough vacation leave ...
And we always knew you rocked.
DEQ = Dair-E-Queen? ;-)
