music music music

after a quick trip to the farmer's market this morning i took myself to the KBOO used record sale. i pawed through just about every album they had, and came out with some real winners... harry nilsson "the point", an LP of selections from the dean martin TV show, some hall & oates. a birthday present for the boy, too. good stuff.

i then drove down to the aladdin theater to buy some tickets: bebel gilberto and forro in the dark (tuesday); josh ritter and eric bachmann (october).

i wanted to visit music millennium today, too (creator of the "keep portland weird" campaign), so i started meandering in that direction, driving through new neighborhoods, when i suddenly happened upon a big street festival.

being an adventurous gal (and spying a ridiculously convenient parking place) i temporarily abandoned my quest and wandered in. i found a food stand with freshly-made felafel and gorgeous baklava, and chowed down while watching little kids dance to a really great band (whose name i never caught).

lots of crafters and political booths. some hula-hoopers, too.

after i'd seen everything the festival had to offer, i continued on my journey to the record store. and everything i'd heard about this place was true... it was fiercely independent, and *incredibly* well-stocked. i bought tons of stuff (the new MIA, new manu chao, josh ritter, a big louis jordan box set) and chatted with the staff in the classical music room for a while.

i'm now back at home, but am heading out again in an hour or so. the first night my mom was in town, we met a cool classical guitarist, a pal of my friend todd... his name is foti. he invited us to a party tonight, so todd and i are going to head over there soon. new people! new part of town! yay!

tomorrow i'm meeting my friend sally for golf, but other than that i think i'm just going to take it easy. i feel like i've been going full steam ahead for quite a while.

Bebel Gilberto put on a really nice show when I saw her opening for Manu Chao. And 2 members of her backing band are in Forro in the Dark, so that's a makes-sense double bill. I suppose there's always a chance that David Byrne could show up during the FitD set -- he's on their CD, and you can find clips of him performing "Asa Branca" with them on youtube.
The Manu Chao CD kicks ass. And I'm really liking what I've heard from the new MIA so far.
